Potter, Veert, and Pederson Win WISSOTA Features, Dobmeier Doubles Up Again:
Date Posted:  June 8th, 2009
Written By:  Mike Orness, Orness Creations

Unseasonably cold weather greeted drivers and fans last Friday at River Cities Speedway to kickoff the month of June. But that didn't cool down Joey Pederson. Pederson entered the Rydell Chevrolet Victory Lane for the second straight week and Mark Dobmeier still is undefeated in the NOSA sprint class. Lyon's Auto Supply and the Kem Shriners sponsored the nights racing activities as seventy-four teams checked in the backgate.

To get the Premier Racing Series started for the night there were two Street Stock heat races which were won by Steffen Snare who started fourth and Bryce Reimer who sat on the pole and led everyone to the checkered flag. Runner-ups in both heats were Tyson Anderson and Rick Beier. During the feature race sponsored by Transystems, Bryce Reimer took a wild ride down the front stretch as his number three machine rolled a few times. Reimer started third and was checked by the paramedics and was ok. This would reset the field for another restart minus those cars not able to continue after the first caution. Steffen Snare was able to race his way to the front from the fifth starting spot and cross the North Dakota Eye Clinic finish line ahead of ninth starting James Wall. Greg Neumann finished third as he was chased across the line by Dan McNamee and Aaron Blacklance.

The largest division of the night was the WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds.Twenty-four drivers were split into three heat races. Patrick Sobolik was the fastest in the first heat race, besting Davy Riopelle and a visiting Bret Schmidt. Todd Johnson used his pole position to his advantage and grabbed the win in the second heat race over Rod Peterson and Skyler Smith. Bryan LePier won the third heat race from the pole by holding off Dustin Strand and Aaron Olson who snuck past Zach Naastad for the third spot. Officials ran a consi taking the top four cars to the Hawks Hobby Heaven feature event which started twenty two cars. Bret Schmidt was the driver who advanced the most positions, starting ninth and finishing a strong third. Aaron Olson put the heat on Dustin Strand late in the feature but was unable to pass Strand who ran the high groove for most of the night. Strand picked up his first win at River Cities Speedway for 2009 after starting third. Olson, who won the first week, settled for second with Schmidt third. Heat winner Sobolik held on to the fourth spot after starting outside the front row, and Todd Johnson advanced three spots to finish fifth by passing Rod Peterson and Bryan LePier.

Brandon Burke has stepped up his program some with some very strong performances to start the year off. The driver won the first WISSOTA Late Model heat race of the night, besting Corcoran, Erickson and the rest of the field. Last week's feature winner, Joey Pederson won the second heat race with Brad Seng and Howie Schill finishing second and third. The Feature event seen Burke grab the lead from the second starting spot, only to lose it to a fast Troy Schill who started on the pole. Schill led basically half the race until Pederson found his way past him with eleven laps to go. Pederson started sixth and crossed the ND Eye Clinic finish line first to sweep the division for the night and chalk up his second straight win.

Schill was able to hold on to the second finishing spot with Doyle Erickson holding on to his starting spot and finish third. Ricky Weiss and Howie Schill raced for a top five spot, but both seemed to slow after the two made contact low in turns three and four. Howie Schill finished ninth as Weiss slowed to bring out a caution and was assisted to the pits on the hook. Tom Corcoran also held on to his starting spot as he finished fourth and Brad Seng, who started eighth, advanced to collect a top five finish. Steve Anderson advanced the most positions on the night by starting twelfth and finishing one spot outside the top five.

Bobby Martin started off his night with a win, advancing from the sixth starting spot in the first of two NOSA sprint car heat races. Lee Grosz was just behind him after starting fifth as outside pole sitter, Lou Kennedy Jr. held on for the third finishing spot. Chris Burke was the fastest in the second and last heat race. Burke started third and crossed under the ckeckered flag with Jason Linnell in tow. Jordan Graham has also stepped up his program and finished a strong third with Flaten and Dobmeier behind him.

Fire & Safety crews were busy as Roemeling rolled his sprinter which involved Dan Wiskow. The twenty-five lap feature event sponsored by Nissan Honda of Grand Forks went caution free and seen Mark Dobmeier rise to the top by passing Casey Mack who led the first part of the race. This was in lap traffic and Mack got held up by a lap car in the line he chose to run. Dobmeier started tenth on the grid with Nygaard just inside him in the ninth starting spot. Nygaard also slipped past Mack to claim the second finishing spot. Mack started third and finished third. Jordan Graham had one of his best ever runs this night by finishing fourth with heat winner Bobby Martin fifth. Pole-sitter, Lou Kennedy Jr. finished just outside the top five with Chris Shirek advancing ten spots to finish seventh. Grosz, Flaten and Burke all slipped back a little but still finished with a top ten.

The Outlaws are coming, June 19th for Father's Day! WoO Sprints with the NLRA Late Models will be the two classes that night. The following night the two organizations will travel south to take to the big half mile at RRVS in West Fargo. But before that we still have one more Premier Racing Series event June 12th, sponsored by Hugo's and Big Jims Tire. Visit rivercitiesspeedway.com for schedule information, results and photos.

Potter, Veert, and Pederson Win WISSOTA Features, Dobmeier Doubles Up Again:
Date Posted:  June 1st, 2009
Written By:  Mike Orness, Orness Creations

A new week and some warmer weather led to some new faces in the Rydell Chevy Victory Lane. The one repeat feature winner was Mark Dobmeier in the NOSA Outlaw Sprint division. Whitey's and Miller Lite were the nightly sponsors of the race for what turned out to be one of the best attendance nights for 2009.

In the Transystems Street Stock division, feature winner from last week, Tyson Anderson won the second of two heat races, while Greg Neumann won the first heat race from the pole. During the feature event on the opening lap, there was a caution for Bryce Reimer which would move the outside row up on spot with him tagging the field on the restart. This put Joe Potter outside Greg Neumann on the front row. Potter and Neumann raced side by side for the first lap, but then it was all Potter till the closing laps. As the laps clicked away, Steffen Snare closed in on Potter and just before the last caution, Snare was setting up to make the pass on Potter for the lead. The field was reset for the last few laps, and Potter raced across the finish line a half car length lead over Snare. Last weeks feature winner, Tyson Anderson finished a strong third with Rick Beier and James wall rounding out the top five positions.

The Hawks Hobby Heaven Midwest Modified division seen three heat races with a total of twenty-three cars entered. Traveler, Scott Bintz, a Jamestown Speedway regular won the first heat race from outside the pole. Zach Naastad of Hatton, ND also started outside the pole and won the second heat race with Todd Johnson advancing from the sixth starting spot to finish second to Naastad. Canadian, Paul Veert bested the others in the third heat race, leading every lap from the pole.

All twenty-three Midwest Modifieds started the feature event with Paul Veert and Rod Peterson on the front row. This feature race was caution filled as many did not finish including the 2008 track champion, Dustin Strand.  Strand was involved in a wreck on the front stretch which he could not avoid, with two other cars starting the melee. Through all the restarts, Veert held on to the lead and won the feature race with Lance Schill having one of his best runs to date as a rookie in the class. Schill finished second to Veert with Todd Johnson advancing from the ninth spot to finish third. Scott Bintz added another top five by finishing fourth as did Bryan LePier, who picked up the hard charger award by advancing ten spots and finishing fifth.

In WISSOTA Late Model race action, last weeks feature winner Brad Seng won the second of two heat races with Howie Schill of West Fargo picking up the win in the first heat race. The feature event seen Brandon Burke of Grand Forks lead almost every lap, and through a couple of cautions, he held onto that lead with Corcoran, Schill and Pederson knocking at the door. With about ten laps complete, Pederson had moved up to challenge Burke for the lead and with three more rounds, Pederson passed Burke in turn four for the lead. Pederson entered Victory Lane for the first time in 2009, a win which Burke would have wanted but still ran strong to finish in the second spot ahead of Veteran, Corcoran. Howie Schill crossed the line for fourth ahead of traveler Jeff Provinzino.

A total of eighteen NOSA Outlaw Sprints supported the night sponsored by Nissan Honda of Grand Forks. Mark Dobmeier made the only return visit to victory lane by passing Casey Mack roughly ten laps into the feature in traffic. Mack won the first heat race of the night with Bob Martin second, both made up the front starting row. Nygaard moved up three spots to finish third. Dobmeier also won the second heat race after starting seventh. Dan Wiskow looked to be comfortable leading the second heat till the pass but still finished second with Brenden Wilde third. The feature race had plenty of action in the caution free twenty-five laps. Martin, Mack, Nygaard raced three wide at times with Nygaard in the mix also. Lap traffic played a part and Martin nabbed the second finishing spot with pole-sitter, Mack, third.

Nygaard advanced four spots for fourth as Chris Shirek finished with a top five after starting eleventh. Lee Grosz of Harwood ND, had trouble in the heat race, tangling on the start, hand an awesome run from eighteenth to finish one spot out of the top five!

River Cities month of June has the WOO Sprints coming on June 19th with the NLRA Late Models. The following night on June 20th, the NLRA will be at the RRVS in West Fargo when the WOO Sprints are there. But between then we still have two Friday's of the Premier Racing Series action June 5th and 12th.

The NLRA Late Models will be at the Jamestown Speedway June 6th. Visit rivercitiesspeedway.com for more information.

Seng, Olson, and Anderson Earn First Checkered Flag at River Cities For 2009
Date Posted:  May 28th, 2009
Written By:  Mike Orness, Orness Creations

River Cities Speedway in Grand Forks, ND finally completed one night of racing for 2009 after the four previous weeks were cancelled due to mother natures unwillingness to cooperate. Even this night was bleak when the skies opened up and dumped a small amount of rain on the speedway. But that was not enough to cancel the races that were sponsored by Tesoro and Canad Inns. It also didn’t stop Brad Seng from sweeping the competition in the Late Model division.

Seng started outside pole in both the heat race and the feature and led the rest of the competitors around to the checkered flag. 2008 track champion, Joey Pederson finished second to Seng in the heat race with Corcoran and Halvorson crossing the finish line behind them. In the second and last heat race for the late models, Troy Schill picked up the win with Erickson and brother Howie Schill behind him. During the feature race, Troy Schill was running with Seng, but exited the track early in the race when his motor let go. Through three cautions, Seng led the race with some pressure from a eager Pederson that would prove to bite him late in the race when trying to find his way past Seng for the win. Pederson slipped up a little in the corner which allowed Howie Schill to get past him for the second finishing spot. Pederson held on for the third spot with Doyle Erickson advancing three spots to finish fourth. John Halvorson and Tom Corcoran raced hard for a top five finish throughout the race, but it was Halvorson that finished fifth when the checkers were in the air.

There were three heat races in the Midwest Modified division sponsored by Hawk’s Hobby Heaven. Rookie, Lance Schill won the first heat race after passing Adam Thompson for the lead. Thompson was later passed by Scott Vasicheck and finished in the third spot. Dustin Strand led the second heat race until Ryan Schroeder passed him on the last lap to pick up the win. Aaron Olson finished in the third spot coming from the back row. Todd Johnson looks to be fast this year, and won the third and final heat race by besting Adam Gajeski who finished second and pole-sitter Naastad finished third.

Aaron Olson started on the pole of the feature race and lead the field across the ND Eye Clinic finish line with Todd Johnson advancing from the seventh spot to finish second. Heat winner Ryan Schroeder started third and finished third with Gajeski fourth after starting ninth. Adam Thompson had a great run by staying in the top five throughout the race and finished fifth holding off Scott Vasichek.

There were two Transystems Street Stock heat races, which were won by Steffen Snare and Rick Beier. Tyson Anderson followed Snare across the line for the second spot in the first heat, with Bryce Reimer third. James Wall chased Beier in the second heat race to finish second, with Greg Neumann third. The main event started all twelve cars, with Tyson Anderson taking control of the race and cruising to his first feature win of 2009 and second career win. Snare started midpack and was held off by Joe Potter, who finished second. Bryce Reimer had a great run staying in the top five most of the race and finished fourth ahead of Rick Beier.

In NOSA Outlaw Sprint race action, there were three heats and a total of twenty-two drivers entered to compete in the Nissan Honda of Grand Forks sponsored division. Mark Dobmeier started on the pole and won the first heat race. Jason Linnell held off Lou Kennedy Jr. to win the second heat race. Thomas Kennedy looked to have a handle on his ride, cruising to the win in the last heat race of the night with Bobby Martin chasing him across the line. At the start of the feature event, Dobmeier would sit on the pole, but during warmup laps, pulled in with transponder issues. He later joined the field in the starting spot to take the first green flag. He then took control of the race with Nygaard and Lou Kennedy Jr, applying pressure throughout the race. Linnell hung in there also and raced Thomas Kennedy for a top five spot. Bob Martin and Lou Kennedy Jr. both pulled in late in the race with mechanical issues, ending their run to chase down Dobmeier who took the checkered flag and started off the season where he left off last year. Nygaard was running second with Linnell and him exchanging spots, but lap cars would prove to bite Nygaard as he ended up making contact with Wilde in turn four on the last lap. Linnell was scored second with Thomas Kennedy finishing strong in the third spot. Tom Egeland was fourth and Ryan Wilson finished fifth after starting eleventh.

Whitey’s and Miller Lite will be the sponsors this coming Friday at the Action Track. The Premier Racing Series will start with hotlaps at 6:30 and racing at 7 PM. Tickets for the upcoming World of Outlaws races are on sale now, and those dates are June 19th for the WOO Sprints, and July 10th for the WOO Late Models. The raffle should be something easy to sell by the drivers as some great prizes will be awarded at the end of the season including;

Year supply of Pepsi
Gas Grill that is in the shape of an engine
One $200 CASH prize
and…….the GRAND Prize which features TWO season passes to River Cities Speedway including ALL specials! (over $1000 value)

MDRA drivers will receive three packs of tickets upon completion of your membership agreement and be required to sell these tickets during the 2009 season.  A $120 cheque will be collected when drivers pick their tickets up and will be post dated to August 1st 2009 in order to allow time for drivers to sell their tickets prior to the check being cashed by River Cities Speedway.  ALL funds raised will be distributed to the driver organizations following the 2009 season to be awarded through their club point funds.  The cheque of $120 is being collected to ensure that ALL tickets will be sold and drivers who turn in the cash they collect during the sale time will get their cheque BACK.

Raffle tickets will be $5 each or can be sold three for $10.  Drivers will be accountable for three packs and again will provide a $120 when they receive their tickets to ensure ALL tickets will be sold.  As part of your MDRA membership agreement driver members will be required to sell these raffle tickets as part of your membership.

Again this is an agreement between River Cities Speedway and the MDRA and ALL MDRA members will be eligible for point fund dollars as part of the 2009 season.

MDRA Opens Membership Up To ANY Drivers Across the "Midwest":
Date Posted:  May 4th, 2009
Written By:  Terry BlackLance

In 2009 the MDRA (Midwest Dirt Racing Association) will open its membership up to ANYONE that is interested in maintaining and building the sport of dirt track stock car racing.  The MDRA which was launched in 2007 has primarily been a Street Stock drivers club at River Cities Speedway and Devils Lake Speedway in North Dakota but in 2009 the goal of the MDRA is to build on that membership and offer drivers in the Street Stock class across the Midwest an organization that offers its drivers a chance to help maintain and BUILD the street stock class which has seen somewhat a declining enrollment over the past few years.

In the 2008 season the MDRA put together and offered its driver members an approximated $10,000.00 point fund which was paid out to EVERY driver that participated.  “Our point fund was UNIQUE in 2008 and was actually paid to its driver members throughout the season when they needed it most” says Terry BlackLance the MDRA Director of Operations.  “We wanted to be sure that our membership was going to be able to participate and keep coming to the track when fuel was $4 per gallon”.  So the MDRA modified its previous point fund using a formula that sent its membership drivers a check in addition to their nightly winnings every time they raced.

In 2009 the MDRA will revert back to the 2007 point fund program and again be awarding its members it’s own point fund at the end of the season based on points accumulated during the season wherever the Street stock class is offered.  MDRA benefits include:

1. FREE Raceceiver with paid MDRA membership and agreement
2. 2009 point fund participation
3. Discounts on various products throughout the year
4. Driver profile on www.midwestdirtracing.com
5. FREE classifieds on MDRA web site
6. Other special offers yet to be announced
7. Respected voice with tracks across the Midwest
8. Association fund raising opportunities for the class

Drivers interested in joining the Midwest Dirt Racing Association for the 2009 Racing Season may do so by filling out an MDRA Driver Membership Form located below or emailing us at midwestdirtracing@hotmail.com

In 2009 the MDRA will be featuring its driver members on our www.midwestdirtracing.com web site.  Forms will be available on this site or on the back of the 2009 membership form.   We are requesting drivers to completely fill the form out and send them in with your membership to be posted on the site during the 2009 season.  A current photo of the driver and his car along with a driver profile will appear on the site giving drivers great visibility and exposure for your sponsors.  This feature is available for MDRA drivers ONLY and offered as a membership benefit.  JPG photos can be emailed to the MDRA at midwestdirtracing@hotmail.com
