Checkers For Geringer At Devils Lake Speedway

The last race for June ended with a Street Stock Special in
place of the Firecracker 40 which was pushed back a weekend.
Beautiful weather greeted fans and drivers as they started
arriving for the nights races with a slight breeze out of the
south. A total of forty-seven teams signed in at the gate with
the Hornet heat races first on the track just after the
drivers meeting.
Richard Barnes and Scott Vasichek both picked up the wins
during the two heat races. Barnes passed early race leader
Bryan Russell to win the first heat while Vasichek led every
lap of the second heat race. The Hornet B-Main Feature winner
was Howard Strand of Brocket ND . Howard started outside the
front row and passed Mitchell Swenning for the lead. Nathan
Krumwiede also passed Swenning for the second spot in the
closing laps. The two heat race winners started on the front
row for the Hornet feature and Vasichek grabbed the lead first
with Barnes and Russell chasing him. After the first caution,
Barnes looked inside of Vasichek and was able to pass him
after a lap or two racing sided by side. On the next lap
Russell was also able to get past Vasichek. That is the way
they finished as Barnes won his fifth straight feature. Dustin
Ebensteiner and Brandin Nelson rounded out the top five spots.
Two cars from Langdon won the Pure Stock heat races, Lance
Schill and Aaron Restad. Two cars that were evidently numbered
and lettered after their favorite Nascar drivers, Matt Kenseth
and Tony Stewart. Schill came from the third spot to take the
lead and the win. Retired Hornet driver, Jason Schuh was
second with another former hornet driver James Ackerman in
third. Aaron Rested started outside pole the second heat race
and won with Travis Aljets second and Lee Dahl a very close
third when the checkered flag flew. During the Pure Stock
feature, a caution on the first lap in turn four sent Aljets
to the rear. Schill ended up leading every lap to claim his
third straight feature win but not without some pressure from
Aljets who eventually made his way back up to second late in
the race and after three other cautions for other drivers.
Kevin Kollman was third, Jason Schuh fourth, and Kristen
Arends fifth after changing a tire midway through the race.
The DTRA/MDRA Service Tire Midwest Modifieds ran two heat
races with Jason Halverson leading the majority of the laps
during the first heat race until Bobby Eckerdt passed him with
a few laps remaining to claim the win. Halverson held on to
second with Stoney Kruk third. During race action of the
second heat race Ryan Schoeder grabbed the lead first from the
pole position but Dustin Strand would eventually take over the
spot on the next lap. Schroeder slipped up in a corner and
lost a spot to Sobolik but was able to get past him to finish
in the second spot when
Strand took the checkered flag. Sobolik held off a charge from
Vargason to finish third. The Feature race was entertaining as
the group of drivers took the checkered flag, they bunched up
and looked like Kruk got the worst of it with some suspension
damage with a yellow flag needed. The field was restarted with
Strand inheriting the outside pole spot when Gage couldn’t
make the call to start after the first caution. Strand was
able to grab the lead on the start with Halverson and Eckerdt
running second and third. Sobolik and Schroeder were also
battling for a top five finish through the next two cautions.
Strand was able to hold off challenges from Eckerdt and
Halverson by protecting the bottom line. If Strand made a
mistake, Eckerdt and Halverson were right there to capitalize
on the mistake. But Strand never did make the mistake Eckerdt
was hoping for and Strand went on to take the checkered flag.
Sobolik was able to claim the fourth spot as Hultstrand passed
Vargason for the fifth spot. On the last lap Halverson was
able to get past Eckerdt for the second spot. After the Street
Stock feature, officials made the statement that Strand was
disqualified for not going through the teching process. That
would give the win to Halverson, his first of this racing
season.
The Street Stock special was moved up a week and they ran
their feature race last but first some notes about their heat
races. Rick Beier started on the pole of the first heat race
and led every lap with some challenge early on from Cliff
Reeves. Snare started dead last and made his way up to finish
third to Beier and Reeves. Neumann and Fugleberg raced
eachother for the fourth spot with Kyle Leake in the mix. But
it was Neumann that finished ahead of Fugleberg and Leake. The
second heat race was won by Geringer who led every lap. Mark
Schwan was running second for awhile until Scott Messner and
Rodney Hulst started to apply a little more pressure. Messner
was able to get past Schwan as did Hulst a couple laps later
and that is the way they crossed the line when Geringer took
the checkered flag. The Street Stock special feature event was
last on the evening’s schedule of events with Beier and
Neumann on the front row. Reeves and Fugleberg started in the
second row with Snare and Schwan right behind them. When the
green flag was dropped, Beier was the first to grab the lead
with Snare picking up a couple spots during the first lap.
Geringer moved up to the fifth spot from the eighth spot as
did Messner who was running in sixth after starting tenth
while Beier was leading. With fourteen laps to go, it looked
like Snare got stuck on the highside and slipped backwards a
few spots. This allowed Messner and Geringer to get past
Neumann and then also past Snare. Snare was now running in the
fourth spot. On the next lap Geringer snuck past Beier using
the very bottom groove. After one more caution and eight laps
to go, Geringer protected the bottom and held off a charge by
Snare who made his way back up to second by passing Beier and
Messner. In the closing laps Geringer didn’t make any mistakes
and took the checkered flag for the second time at Devils Lake
Speedway this year and picked up the trophy for the special
event. Snare settled for second, Messner third, Beier fourth
and Neumann fifth by holding off Fugleberg. Reeves salvaged a
seventh place finish ahead of Hulst and Schwan.
July 7th will be the Firecracker 40 Midwest
Modified Special sponsored by Lake Chevrolet . There should be
a great field of cars for this event as Jamestown and RRVS
will not be running that class of cars. The winner will
receive $1000 and each starter of the feature will get $100.
The Service Tire Midwest Modified Tour will be at
River Cities Speedway the night before. For more

June 30th 2007 Norman County Raceway Race Report From KRJB

The Saturday special at
Norman County Raceway in Ada drew a season high paid
attendance of 883 on the final night of the Norman County
Fair. The sprints were at NCR for their annual visit along
with 27 Mod Fours for a special and the four cylinders and
purestock classes. Fans saw some great racing and saw a major
accident when Brady Dyrdal of Bagley flipped , flew and rolled
on the front straight during the mod-four feature. Dyrdal was
in the air some estimated 30 feet above ground for
approximately 100 feet before his car came down and rolled
landing on it's top at the start finish line. Fortunately
Dyrdal walked away with no apparent injuries. Kenny Domogalla
took the head on collision with the wall and two other cars
during the purestock feature. The sprints saw Dan Wiksow's
number 7 get the front end busted up in the heats and then
during the feature Scott Butz went end over end , landing on
the wheels in a three sprint car mis-hap. The racing was great
with the sprint cars reaching speeds in excess of 100 miles
per hour and the fans enjoyed the night. Here's all the
results from the Saturday night special at the Norman County
Raceway. |

Hot Summer Nights, Hot Racing Action At River Cities Speedway
Date Posted: July 9th, 2007
Written By:
Mike Orness
On a night where the temps were about the hottest they’ve been
all summer, seventy-three teams entered the back gate for the
Premier Racing Series sponsored by Aaron’s Sales & Lease of
Grand Forks . It was also Hugos Family Fun night in which a
lucky kid would win a bicycle given by the Grand Forks County
Sheriffs Department. Going into the night, Snare was the point
leader over Geringer in the Unicel Street Stocks, while Strand
held a huge lead over SanGrait in the Dempsey Truck Service
Midwest Modifieds.
Joey Pederson and Mike Balcaen continue the
tightest points race of all classes with Pederson only one
point ahead of Balcaen in the Atekparts.com Late Models. Mark
Dobmeier continues to lead the Eide Motors Sprint point
standings by thirty-five over Jason Linnell.
To get the night started, eighteen drivers were split into
three heat races for the Street Stocks. Dave Wittner won the
first heat from the pole with Greg Jose second. Steffen Snare
also won from the pole in the second heat over Bryce Reimer.
Kyle Leake held off Jim Geringer for the win to conclude the
third heat race for the Unicel MDRA/DTRA Street Stocks.
Two heat races were scheduled for the Dempsey Truck Service
Midwest Modifieds. Ryan Schroeder and Chris Vargason lead the
field around to take the green flag for the first heat.
Vargason lead every lap except the last when Schroeder passed
him to take the checkered flag. James SanGrait passed Joe
Freeman to capture the win during the second heat race.
SanGrait started outside the front row with Freeman on the
pole.
Doyle Erickson added a heat race win to his totals this year
during the first heat race for the Atek Parts DTRA Late
Models. Erickson passed Anderson for the lead with Balcaen
moving up one spot to finish second with
Anderson third. James SanGrait and troy Schill started on the
front row for the second heat race, with SanGrait taking the
checkered flag first after passing Schill for the lead
Pederson started in the last row and moved forward to finish
fourth behind Seng.
Twenty-four NOSA Sprint Car teams entered and were split into
three heat races. Mark Dobmeier won the first heat from the
back row with a last lap pass on Casey Mack who had started in
the second row after Tom Cummings elected to start in the back
instead of on the pole. During the race, Austin Monson
cartwheeled his sprint car on the backstretch after contact
with Roemeling. Austin was ok after being checked by track
paramedics. The second heat race had Wiskow and Egeland on the
front row and the caution flag flew before one lap was
complete for Linnell with mechanical issues. When the race was
restarted it was Egeland and McDonald out to the lead first.
Egeland held the lead for a brief period then McDonald passed
him for the lead and the win. Wade Nygaard came from the back
row to claim second with Egeland third. Graham and Nikitenko
lead the third flight of sprints to the green flag with
Fredrickson and Glennon in the second row. On the start it was
Nikitenko that grabbed the lead and led most of the race until
Glennon passed him late in the race for the win. Chris Shirek
came from the back row to finish third ahead of Fredrickson.
During the Hugos & Nestle candy toss during the intermission,
officials worked the track, and drivers completed the redraws
in the pit area. Once the lineups were completed the Unicel
MDRA Street Stocks made their way onto the track with Wittner
and Jose on the front row. Current point leader, Snare started
in the eighth spot with Geringer in the next row. Wittner
grabbed the lead immediately with Beier moving up quickly from
the fifth spot. With just seven laps to go, Snare had made his
way up to the third spot and looked to take the second spot
from Beier when the caution flag waved. Snare was scored
second and fronstretch flagman, Gordy Tuel lined up the rest
of the field behind Wittner. The race went green to checkered
after that with Snare unable to get past Wittner for the lead
and actually slipped back one spot with Beier passing him for
the second spot. Jim Geringer finished fourth with Potter
fifth after starting sixth.
The next Premier Racing Series division to race their feature
was the Dempsey Truck Service Midwest Modifieds. Joe Freeman
and Dave Hultstrand were on the front row with Gary Sonstelie
and Dustin Ness behind them on the start. Freeman and
Hultstrand raced for the first spot while Hultstrand
eventually would pull out to lead just shortly after the first
caution. The second caution flew when the lineup wasn’t
correct so the officials realigned the field and gave them the
green. The third caution came out and turned to a red flag
when SanGrait was racing hard for the lead and ended up
rolling over coming out of turn two. Contact between the
leader, Hultstrand, and SanGrait is what caused the wreck, but
James was ok and was happy to conduct a short interview by
Norm King, the RCS roving reporter. Hultstrand went to the
pits with a flat left front tire and didn’t come back which
gave the lead to Joe Freeman. Sonstelie followed Freeman to
the next green flag. Two more cautions would fly for minor
incidents, and with seven laps to go, strand was challenging
for the lead from the eleventh starting spot. Strand was able
to complete the pass and win the feature with Sonstelie also
sneaking past Freeman for the second spot. Rod Peterson chased
Freeman across the line for fourth and after going tailend
earlier in the race, Bryan LePier finished fifth.
There were sixteen Atek Parts Late Model starters for their
twenty lap feature with Troy Schill and Ricky Weiss on the
pole. Cody Skytland and Joey Pederson started in the second
row. When the green flag dropped it was a race for second as
Troy Schill jumped out to lead the first lap. Pederson,
Skytland, Weiss were racing hard for the second spot when
Balcaen moved into the picture with four laps complete.
Pederson held on to the second spot with Skytland third when
the yellow flag waved for Erickson. With the field realigned,
they were given the green again. This time the yellow waved
for cars that went off the track which were Anderson and
Jacobson. They were sent tailend and the green flag was given
to Troy Schill who was still leading the race. With just three
more laps complete, Pederson made his move on Schill for the
lead. At the same time, Balcaen and Seng passed Weiss for the
fourth and fifth spot. The last caution of the night came out
with eleven laps to go and Pederson in the lead. Under green
flag racing again, Seng motored past Schill and Skytland to
claim the second spot with Balcaen in tow. In the closing
laps, Pederson held a comfortable lead with Send and Balcaen
racing for the second spot. Soon Erickson moved into the
picture after making his way through the field from a early
race caution. When Pederson crossed the checkered flag,
Erickson had just passed Balcaen to secure the third spot but
couldn’t get past Seng who finished second. Balcaen was fourth
as Dale Skytland added a top five finish to his stats
The last feature event of the evening was being pushed off
from the pits once Pederson’s victory lane photos were taken.
The Eide Motors NOSA Sprint Car twenty-five lap feature was
set with Dobmeier and Shirek starting at the back for this
race. Egeland and Nikitenko led the field of twenty-three
drivers to the green flag. McDonald and Egeland raced
eachother tight, just like the heat race, but it was McDonald
that was scored as the leader when the first caution flag was
thrown for Nick Shirek in turn four. With just three laps
complete Dobmeier was already up to twelfth after starting in
the back. McDonald led the field back to the green flag as
Nygaard worked his way up from the eighth starting spot to
third. Glennon, Mack, and Martin put on a great show for the
fans as they were racing for the fourth spot with seven laps
complete. Martin passed Glennon, then the caution flag waved
for Lee Grosz who evidently slipped off the track. That yellow
had just came out after Nygaard passed McDonald for the lead
the previous lap. With just sixteen laps to go, there were two
more cautions for cars that spun as Dobmeier was closing in on
the top three spots. Under green again Dobmeier passed
McDonald for the second spot but ironically would be voided
with thirteen laps to go for a caution flag. The flag was
restarted as Nygaard led the field. On the start, Wiskow’s
left rear tire came off coming to the cone on the frontstretch.
Nygaard was getting tested as there were two more cautions
that came out in the closing laps with Dobmeier right behind
him. With just a few laps to go, Dobmeier’s front wing came
loose which made him work at steering the car more. Nygaard
increased his lead a little while Martin had secured the third
spot over Glennon. Once Wade held off Dobmeier and crossed
under the checkered flag, Mack claimed the fifth spot over
McDonald with Glennon finishing behind Martin. Props to the
Austin Monson team that pieced back together their car to
start the feature after the nasty wreck in the heat race. Wade
Nygaard claimed his first win at River Cities Speedway this
year, by holding off Dobmeier who started in the last row.

Dustin Strand Wins The Midwest Modified Firecracker 40 & $1000
Paycheck
Date Posted: July 9th, 2007
Written By:
Mike Orness
Dustin Strand seems to be the driver to beat. Racking up win
after win around the area tracks, Strand was looking to take
home the trophy for the Firecracker 40 along with the $1,000
payout, but not without many other drivers looking to do the
same thing. The Firecracker 40 is the areas biggest payday’s
for the Midwest Modified Division and is sponsored by Lake
Chevrolet of Devils Lake . The weather was almost unbearable
as the teams were entering the back gate with no wind and
temps that felt like ninety-six degrees.
The first heat races of the night were the four cylinder
Hornet cars. There were two heat races with the first heat
race win going to Scott Vasichek. Tiffany Sten led the race
early on but was passed Vasichek with a couple laps complete.
Bryan Russell finished second to Vasichek with Justin Myers
picking up third place. Current point leader, Richard Barnes
drew the pole for the second heat race and led every lap to
pick up another heat race win. Brandin Nelson and Mitchell
Swenning chased him across the line.
There was one Pure Stock heat race for the night with Kristen
Arends and Kevin Kollman on the front row. When the green flag
dropped Kollman grabbed the lead first but was eventually
overtaken by Lance Schill who started in the third row. Schill
continued to lead every lap thereafter and picked up the heat
win. Kollman finished second with Jason Schuh third.
For the MDRA/DTRA Street Stocks, there were two heat races
with the current point leader, Steffen Snare on the pole for
the first heat race. Snare grabbed the lead when the green
flag dropped. Greg Neumann ran second with Joe Potter third
for most of the race. Potter was able to get underneath
Neumann for the second spot with two laps remaining. Snare won
the heat race with Potter second and Neumann third. Dale
Fugleberg came from the last row to finish fourth. The second
heat race for the street stocks had Cliff Reeves and James
Meagher on the front row. Reeves grabbed the lead right away
with Wittner second. Meagher got a little loose in turn two
which forced Geringer to slow and avoid him. Geringer lost a
lot of ground to the leaders, but salvaged a fourth place
finish to Reeves who grabbed the heat race win. Wittner was
second and Rick Beier third.
There were twenty-three Midwest Modified teams that entered
the Firecracker 40 sponsored by Lake Chevrolet . There were
three heat races with the first heat race won by Rich Pavlicek
of Fargo, ND . Pavlicek started outside Ryan Restad on the
front row. LePier and Klaudt were in the second row and all
put on a dash for the lead, but it was Pavlicek in the end
that was in the lead. Restad placed second ahead of Kenny
Klaudt of Bismarck, ND . During the start of the second heat
race, Josh Eberhardt and Karl Tollefson put the pressure on
Patrick Sobolik who started on the pole. Tollefson grabbed the
lead from the outside pole position and then Eberhardt passed
Tollefson for the lead two laps later with Sobolik running
third. After a lap one caution charged to Dustin Nelson,
Nelson made his way back through the field to challenge
Tollefson and Tuchscherer for the second spot. When Eberhardt
took the checkered flag it was Nelson in second and
tuchscherer third. Tollefson finished fourth with Sobolik
fifth. The third and final heat race of the night had the
current track points leader starting fourth with Jason
Halverson on the pole and Tim Compson outside of Halverson. On
the start there was a caution which restarted the field in the
came order. On the second start it was Halverson who grabbed
the lead first with
Strand moving up to the second spot. Strand eventually passed
Halverson for the lead and led every lap thereafter for the
heat win. Halverson held off Tony Johnson and Bobby Eckerdt
who started in the back of the heat race.
Officials took a brief intermission to work the track and get
the lineups posted for the feature races of the night. There
was a candy toss for the kids from the flagstand along with
some trivia from track announcer Terry Blacklance. With the
track prepared for the features the first feature of Hornets
was ready to go.
The Hornet feature was lined up according to the finish of the
two heat races. The inside row was the inverted finish from
the second heat race, and the outside starting spots were the
inverted finish of the first heat race. With the field given
the green flag there was no laps complete as the yellow flag
waved for contact and a car stopped on the track. On the
second restart Sten was scored as the leader with Krumwiede
second. By the completion of the second lap, Barnes and
Vasichek had made their way through the field and were looking
to take over the lead. On the next lap, Barnes passed sten for
the lead and went on to win his sixth consecutive race. Bryan
Russell claimed the second spot over Vasichek in third. Sten
rounded out the top five with Krumwiede ahead of her crossing
the checkered flag.
Mark Tuenge and Aaron Restad started the Pure Stock feature on
the front row with Lee Dahl and James Ackerman in the second
row. On the start Restad raced to the lead with Dahl in second
and Ackerman . A couple laps later Lance Schill moved into the
second spot by passing Ackerman as Kollman slipped back. With
just four laps to go, Schill passed Restad for the lead and
led every lap till the checkerd flag came out to claim his
fifth consecutive feature win. Restad was second to Schill
with Mark Schwan third, Jason Schuh fourth and Kevin Kollman
fifth.
The feature for the MDRA/DTRA Street Stocks was next as they
rolled up onto the track for fifteen laps. Joe Potter and Jim
Geringer lined up on the front row with Neumann and Wittner in
the second row. When the green flag dropped it was Potter and
Geringer that raced side by side along with Neumann and
Wittner side by side for almost two laps till Potter claimed
the lead with Geringer falling in behind him. The first
caution came out when Arends made contact with Fugleberg which
forced him off the backstretch. Once the field was realigned
with Potter out front, the rest were double file and given the
green flag. Potter continued to lead, but was heavily
pressured by Geringer and soon Snare as he made his way up
from the ninth starting spot. With all the front runners
crowding the bottom of the track, Snare snuck in below
Geringer for the second spot. Two laps later Snare did the
same with Potter to claim the lead. The next caution came out
when Neumann made contact with the front wall. The field was
lined up again and given the green one last time for the
remainder of the race. Snare pulled out to about a four car
lead with Potter and Geringer chasing him. Late in the race
Rick Beier put some pressure on Geringer for the third spot
was unable to complete the pass. Snare won the feature race
with Potter and Geringer in tow. Beier was fourth after
starting seventh and Wittner was fifth from the fourth
starting spot.
The last feature of the night was the forty lap Firecracker 40
for the DTRA/MDRA Midwest Modifieds sponsored by
Lake Chevrolet . All twenty three cars would start the feature
lined up straight up from the heat races. The first two heat
race winners, Rich Pavlicek and Josh Eberhardt made up the
front row with the third heat race winner inside the second
row. On the first lap, in the middle of turns one and two was
a pile up of cars who couldn’t avoid the contact between
Eberhardt and Pavlicek. Jerry Theis who started back in
seventieth ended up with the worst damage to the left front
and was unable to continue. Pavlicek look to escape anything
major, but pitted to check things out.
The field was lined back up and given the green flag. Another
caution for Halverson who spun in turn four. Andy Neumann
pitted with a left front flat and started tailend. Once again
the field was lined up with no laps complete. This time Dustin
Strand grabbed the lead with Eberhardt second and Restad
pressuring them for the lead. With two laps complete the
yellow flag flew again. This time there were two other
cautions and many yellow flag laps. The green was given to
Strand who held the lead out front and the rest of the field
double-file. The scoreboard now read four laps complete
instead of two, and the race went green for quite awhile as
all the drivers crowded the bottom groove. Soon Tollefson and
Johnson tried the next groove up. At times they were two and
three wide as the race was for spot within the top five
between six different cars. Eberhardt continued to hold onto
second with Restad third Eckerdt fourth and Tollefson fifth.
The sixth caution came out for Edwards.
The field was lined up again and given the green. On the
restarts, drivers would actually be three wide in the corners.
Some gained some spots and some lost spots. This restart seen
Eberhardt slip backwards with Restad and Tollefson racing for
the second spot. During all of this action up front, Pavlicek
made his way through the field and was racing for a top five
spot with about 8 laps remaining. After a brief caution for
Vargason, the field was once again under green flag racing. On
this restart Pavlicek moved into the top five with Eckerdt and
Eberhardt slipping back two spots. With just six laps to go,
Strand continued to lead the field with Tollefson running
second briefly then Pavlicek passing him to claim the spot.
Eckerdt made his way back up to the fourth spot with Restad in
the mix also when another caution for Klaudt came out. The
field was realigned and given the green flag again. With no
laps complete contact between Tuchscherer and Nelson brought
out the second to last caution.
There was one other caution once the field was given the green
flag again and that was for contact between Tony Johnson who
drove over Nelsons left front tire, then proceeded to run into
the back of Tim Compson and spin him out in front of the
flagstand. That was the final caution, but meanwhile up front
the restarts were the most exciting as the top five drivers
all had a chance for the second spot. Some crowded the bottom
while others made the next groove up work for them. With the
double-file restarts the last few laps made it exciting and in
the final laps Restad made his way back up from the fourth
spot to claim the second spot over Pavlicek as Dustin Strand
took the checkered flag and won the Firecracker 40. Bobby
Eckerdt raced from the twelfth spot to finish fourth in front
of Josh Eberhardt who finished fifth. Karl Tollefson from
Beltrami, MN was once in second and raced hard throughout the
night finished in the sixth spot slipping back on the last
restart. Reinke finished seventh after starting in the
eighteenth spot with Ryan Schroeder finishing in eighth coming
from the sixteenth spot. Andy Neumann, who raced his second
race of the year finished ninth with Jason Halverson tenth.
