A
very nice crowd of 666 watched a great night of racing at the
Norman County Raceway
in Ada, Minnesota Thursday night. For the first time this
season, Shayne Laske did not win the feature of the Mod Four
class. It was Cody Erickson of Ulen to take the checkered flag
for the first time this season. Through the first four weeks,
Erickson had finished second to Laske three times, tonight in
week five, Erickson raced the 1X car and held off Laske to
take his first feature win. After Brock Gronwold won the heat
race in the MIdwest Mods, the driver of the 2G won the
feature. Purestock points leader Paul Olson won another
feature this week to strengthen his standing at the top of the
standings when Ken Crane ( 2nd in points) could not race due
to engine troubles. One week after having to leave the track
in the feature race, Dev Malmlov came back with a great night
of racing to win one heat of Modifieds and take his second
feature win of the season at NCR. Here's all the results: |

Sobczak Victorious At Devils Run Sprint Car Classic:
Date Posted: June 8th, 2007
Written By:
Mike Orness
With Devils Lake busy with the 15 th Annual Devils
Run, it was also time for the annual Devils Run Sprint Car
Classic at the
Devils Lake Speedway. Last year Dave Sobczak won the event
and he was back on the track to see if he could best the field
of twenty-two other teams also entered. To start off the
night, three Hornet heat races were ran with Richard Barnes,
Bryan Russell, and Scott Vasichek picking up the wins. Maranda
Arends, Paul Tronson, and Jason Landeis were second to those
first place finishes.
With area tracks either getting too much rain, Devils Lake
Speedway had a few new cars for their second race of the year
in the MDRA Pure Stock division. Trent Grager of Sykeston , ND
enjoyed his first heat race win at Devils Lake Speedway,
besting Travis Aljets and Lance Schill during the first heat
race. Lee Dahl handled the second flight of Pure Stocks with
Charlie Carr and Ross Bollingberg racing him to the checkered
flag.
During the first heat race of Midwest Modifieds sponsored by
Service Tire of Devils Lake, Jason strand led the majority of
laps until Bryan LePier passed him for the lead and win later
in the race. Dale Kraling held off Stoney Kruk for the third
spot. Dustin Strand led every lap of the second heat and
picked up his second heat race win of the year at Devils Lake
Speedway by out running Chris Vargason and Jeff Halverson to
wrap up the heat races for the DTRA/MDRA Midwest Modifieds.
The first flight of three NOSA Outlaw Sprint Cars were pushed
up onto the track with Lou Kennedy Jr and Kyle Fedyk on the
front row. Kennedy grabbed the lead at the drop of the green
flag and didn’t look back to pick up the first heat race win.
Bob Martin finished second after starting fourth and Dave
Sobczak was third after starting third. Jason Linnell briefly
had third place with a massive slidejob on Martin, but on the
next lap Martin stormed back around to claim that second spot.
Greg Nikitenko and Scott McDonald led the second flight of
sprints to the green flag. Nikitenko grabbed the lead with
Nygaard storming up from the sixth spot quickly. With 6 laps
to go, Nygaard made his move to around Nikitenko for the lead
while McDonald and Chris Shirek raced hard for the third spot.
With the checkered flag in the air, Nygaard claimed the win
with Nikitenko second and Shirek held onto the third spot.
Kevin Lawson and Scott Butz composed the front row of the
third NOSA heat race and on the start Butz grabbed the lead.
Butz has some trouble in turn four which sent him to the tail
on the restart. This gave the lead to Casey Mack who had
passed three competitors for the second spot before the
yellow. Mack wouldn’t give up the lead and took the checkered
flag. Lawson, Monson, and Burke raced for the second spot but
it was Burke who claimed that position with Monson third ahead
of Lawson.
After a brief intermission for the drivers to redraw and
officials to pack in the top of the track, the Bmain for the
Hornets would be ran. Nathan Krumwiede and Brenten Wiesz led
the field around to take the green flag with Scott Fitzner and
Tiffany Sten in the second row. With only one caution flag
during the Bmain, Wiesz grabbed the lead and never gave it up
to pick up the trophy and Bmain win. Justin McCarthy picked up
second after starting fifth with Nathan Krumwiede third.
Richard Barnes started on the pole for the Hornet Feature race
with Scott Vasichek outside of him to take the green flag.
Barnes grabbed the lead to start with and Vasichek and Landeis
battled for the second spot. After a couple yellow flags
Barnes continued to lead and with three laps to go, stretched
his lead out while Landeis and Vasicheck both tried to secure
the second spot once the checkered was out. Landeis was scored
second with Vasichek third. Jason Landeis grabbed the fourth
spot ahead of Bryan Russell.
The MDRA Pure Stocks were up next with their feature race with
Trent Grager and Lee Dahl on the front row. On the start it
looked like Grager would pull out to the lead but suffered a
flat and pitted when the yellow flag waved for Curt Olson who
had slowed and stopped in turn two. Grager restarted last as
the field was realigned and given the green flag again. Aljets
and Lee Dahl scrambled for the lead as Charlie Carr and Lance
Schill raced for the next spot. In the closing laps Aljets
continued to lead with some pressure from Carr, but Aljets was
better through the corners and brought home the win in his
first appearance at Devils Lake Speedway. Carr settled for
second after racing Lee Dahl pretty much throughout the race.
Lance Schill finished fourth ahead of Ross Bollingberg who
finished with a top five in his first visit to the track.
Fifteen laps were clicked back up on the counter for the
Service Tire Midwest Modified feature race. Stoney Kruk and
Patrick Sobolik brought the field around to take the green
flag. The first lap was three wide for the lead Both Strands
along with Sobolik running the top followed Kruk for lap one.
Dustin Strand eventually took the lead on lap two with Jason
Strand second as Kruk and LePier battled for the third spot.
The first yellow was thrown for Hultstrand in turn two.
Officials lined up the field with Dustin Strand out in front.
The race went caution free till the checkered as Dustin Strand
made it two for two by winning this feature. Late in the race
Jason Strand pulled off giving the second place to LePier.
Kruk was running fourth most of the race trying to hold off
Halverson who was trying to get by him. Kruk was able to hold
on to the third spot with Jason Halverson fourth ahead of Ryan
Schroeder fifth after starting eleventh.
The last race of the night was the feature for the high flying
410 Outlaw Sprints with twenty-two starting the feature. Dave
Sobczak and Austin Monson led the field around for the green
with Nikitenko and Burke in the second row. On the start,
Sobczak looked to grab the lead, but the yellow flag would fly
for Burke and Nygaard who slid off the top of turns one and
two, but kept going. The field would be restarted with Nygaard
and Burke at the tail. The green was given again, but within
seconds after the green was given the red flag would be
displayed for Ryan Wilson and Nick Shirek who tangled and
rolled off turn one with Shirek getting the worse end of the
ordeal. Wilson had put his car back together after contact
with the wall during hotlaps and didn’t have much luck for the
feature either. Both drivers were ok and checked out by the
paramedics. On the start again, the field would take the green
flag with Sobczak grabbing the lead but not without some
challenge from Monson. Chris Shirek slowed with twenty-one
laps to go which brought out the yellow flag. The field was
lined up once again and went green for about five laps when
the next caution came out when Sitzmann and Mikkelson got
together. While the green was given again, the best race was
for second when Kennedy and Monson swapped positions lap after
lap, but it was Monson who was able to secure the spot.
Sobczak was racing into lap traffic while Martin, Kennedy, and
Linnell raced hard for the third spot. Mack, Nikitenko, and
Butz were the next in line racing for position. The last
caution came out late in the race for Roemeling, which would
set up a shootout for the final laps. Sobczak was in control
and when the green was displayed had no trouble holding on to
the first spot. Monson, Martin, and Kennedy made the race
interesting for the fans, while Mack looked to get past
Linnell. Linnell was just a bit better down the straights to
hold on to the fifth finishing spot when Sobczak took the
checkered flag. Monson held off challenges by Martin and
Kennedy who finished respectively after Monson.
Devils
Lake Speedway will be running again this Saturday showing
appreciation for the sponsors of the speedway and all of the
drivers. All regular classes will run with race action
starting at seven o’clock. There will be two more races
through the year when the NOSA Outlaw sprints will be back in
action here. More information can be found at

get the race in. The weather Friday night was comfortable,
with sun and a little wind. The track was rough, but given the
circumstances, the drivers knew that, and dealt with it. On a
race night sponsored by Lyons Auto Supply and Butler Machinery
the 3,000 plus fans were able to see Mark Dobmeier win his
fourth consecutive race at River Cities Speedway, Doyle
Erickson make a last corner pass to pick up his first DTRA win
for 2006, Bryan LePier and Steffen Snare win their second
consecutive race.
The Unicel
Street Stock heats were the first even on the program with
Aaron Olson passing Greg Neumann to win the first heat. Jim
Geringer held off Dave Wittner to pick up his third heat race
win. Steffen Snare won his second heat race of the year by
rocketing past Hulst and Mutcher on the second lap with Henry
Peters second.
The Dempsey
Truck Service Midwest Modifieds had three heat races scheduled
with Broden and Freeman on the front row of the first heat
race. Broden and Freeman raced for the lead, but Freeman as
able to get out front first and lead every lap to the
checkered flag. LePier was able to sneak past Broden to finish
second. Hultstrand and SanGrait led the second fight of
Midwest Mods to the green flag. They both raced side by side
for the first lap, but SanGrait was able to grab the lead but
not for long as Halverson and Dydahl were challenging him in
the closing laps. Dyrdahl who started dead last, completed the
pass for the lead when it counted and picked up his first heat
race win at River Cities. Halverson also passed SanGrait for
the second spot. Heat race number three started with Dustin
Strand using the outside pole and high side of the track to
his advantage. He led every lap to win his fourth heat race of
the year at River Cities. Sobolik held on to the second spot
with Dan Ness and Jesse Olson putting on a show for the fans
at the finish line with Ness scored as the third place
finisher and Olson as fourth.
Nineteen DTRA
Late Models were split up into three heats. The first Atek
Parts heat race was won by Doyle Erickson who had started
outside front row. Pederson passed Cody Skytland early in the
race for the second spot. Brady Dyrdahl started on the pole
for the second heat race and rocketed out to the lead on the
start. By this time the track was getting rough and the rest
of the drivers basically held on to their spots and finished
accordingly. Sangrait was second with Corcoran third. Heat
three was about the same although Brad Seng was able to grab
the lead with
Anderson racing hard to grab the lead, but wasn’t successful.
Mike Balcaen Also tried his best but did advance two spots to
finish third.
The first
heat race of Eide Motors NOSA Sprints was up next with Nygaard
starting outside pole and lapping almost everyone except
Fredrickson who finished second. Jason Linnell was the fastest
and bested the rest of the filed during the second heat race
after starting outside front row. Dave Sobczak advanced three
spots to trail Linnell across the finish line. Casey Mack and
Lou Kennedy brought the third heat race of drivers around to
take the green flag. Kennedy grabbed the lead first but caught
a couple rough spots in the track which allowed Dobmeier to
get past him about halfway through the race. After a brief
caution, Dobmeier was able to lead the rest of the way to the
checkered flag for his third heat race win at River Cities.
There was a
brief intermission for the Nestle/Hugos candy toss for the
kids and also for the track crew to try and scrap down some
rough areas of the track. Drivers were also redrawing for
their starting spots to set up the nights feature races.
The fifteen
lap Unicel MDRA/DTRA Street Stocks were the first feature race
on the track after intermission with Swedin and Austreng on
the front row. At the drop of the green flag, it looked as if
Leake got a jump on the rest of the field but officials let it
go. Aaron Olson quickly made his way to the front with Snare
in tow. The first caution came out for Neumann with 10 laps to
go. The race went caution free after that with some cars just
pulling off with mechanical problems or tire issues. Olson
continued to lead, but Snare was able to get under him out of
turn four and complete the pass with about eight laps
remaining. Snare increased his lead and took the checkered
flag for his second straight win. Olson, Wittner and Geringer
finished respectively in those positions without much
challenge from any of them.
The twenty
one DTRA/MDRA Midwest Modifieds ran their feature next
sponsored by Dempsey Truck Service. Schroeder and Broden led
the rest to the start with the caution flag waving before a
lap was complete when Sobolik had nowhere to go as cars got
bottled up and Sobolik tried to avoid the melee. On the next
start, Broden grabbed the lead with LePier, Schroeder, and
Halverson racing for the second spot. Dan Ness and Dyrdahl
were also in the mix all racing for a top five spot. With
fourteen laps to go, LePier completed the pass for the lead in
turns two and three. Dyrdahl’s left front suffered some with
the wheel sitting off kilter, but kept racing hard for the
third spot. With only seven laps remaining the caution flag
flew again for Olson and Dyrdahl was assisted to the pits.
LePier continued to lead as now Strand had made his way up
from the seventh starting spot to challenge for the third spot
after that last restart. Another lap later, Strand drove
around Broden to secure the second spot. Broden seemed to be
falling back as SanGrait and Schreoder also passed him. The
last caution came out for Sparby who got sideways coming out
of turn four. LePier continued to lead after the restart and
held off a couple challenges by Strand for his second straight
win at River Cities. Schroeder had his best finish of the year
so far by holding off SanGrait for the third spot.
The Atek
Parts DTRA Late Models started nineteen Late Models for their
feature with Dyrdahl and Pederson on the front row. On the
start some bad luck struck Dyrdahl as he slowed to bring out
the first caution after one lap was complete and had to exit
pitside. Pederson had grabbed the lead with Anderson second
and Erickson third as the green flag dropped for the restart.
Anderson started sixth and was giving his all to challenge
Pederson for the lead throughout the race. With sixteen laps
remaining, the second caution flag flew and officials
realigned the field. Another caution flew one lap later with
only ten late models remaining. Under green flag racing
Pederson and Anderson were entering lap traffic. Anderson
almost completed the pass but got caught up with a lap car and
basically ripped off the right side tin of the car. With only
six laps left, Pederson led the field with Erickson and
Balcaen racing hard to get past him. In the closing laps
Pederson suffered some suspension damage but continued to
lead. On the last corner of the last lap, Erickson saw an
opening and was able to use the high groove and pass Pederson
coming to the checkered flag. Pederson held on to second in
front of Balcaen with Cody Skytland and Amundson fifth.
The final
event of the night was the NOSA Outlaw Sprints for their
twenty-five lap feature sponsored by Eide Motors. Scott Butz
and Lou Kennedy were the front row starters with Martin and
Fredrickson in the second row. Lou Kennedy rocketed to the
lead on the start with Martin chasing him. Dobmeier who had
started eighth was up to third in a matter of two laps. In the
next couple of laps while the leaders entered lap traffic,
Linnnell Sobczak and Mack were all racing for a top five
finish. Dobmeier found his way past Martin for the second spot
as Kennedy continued to lead. Just before the first caution of
this feature, Dobmeier had secured the lead over Kennedy.
Graham and Fredrickson got together coming out of turn four to
bring that caution over the field. On the restart, Dobmeier
started the racing with ten laps remaining. At this time of
the feature, Chris Shirek, Sobczak, Mack and Nygaard where
racing for a top five spot while they all completed one lap,
the caution came out one last time. The field was basically
the same with Dobmeier in control. Soon after the green
dropped and racing continued, Kennedy had pulled of the track
under green. The race went caution free for the last nine laps
as Dobmeier earned his fourth straight victory at River Cities
with Martin a strong second. Linnell finished third just ahead
of Chris Shirek who had started the race in the twenty second
spot. Dave Sobczak rounded out the top five ahead of Mack.
