May 3rd 2007 Norman
County Raceway Race Report From KRJB 106.3 FM:
Date Posted: May 4th, 2007
Written By:

A crowd of over 500 witnessed the season opener at
Norman
County Raceway Thursday night. It was a quick night of
racing through the heats with only two caution flags through
five classes of racing. The drivers and cars weren't as
efficient or cautious in the features with several yellow
flags. The midwest mod 20 car field had a difficult time
completing laps with the feature eventually getting in seven
laps and having the feature reduced to a twelve lap event. The

Pederson & SanGrait Pick Up DTRA Wins. Dobmeier &
Wittner Also Victorious:
Date Posted: May 13th, 2007
Written By:
Mike Orness
After cancellation of last week’s program due to weather,
River Cities
Speedway
was back on track with their Premier Racing Series. An
abundant amount of cars entered the pits with some new faces
and car numbers since
Red River
Valley
Speedway cancelled their program because of rain. Also some
new Street Stock and Midwest Mod drivers that just weren’t
ready the first week. The track was fast and heavy which was
totally different than the prior race night.
The track was packed and race ready for the first heat race of
three for the Unicel Street Stocks. Greg Neumann jumped out to
an early lead and led every lap to cross the finish line ahead
of Any Thompson and Rick Beier. Steffen Snare held off Aaron
Olson and Jim Geringer to win heat two. Dan McNammee of
Arvilla took the checkered flag first for the
last street
stock heat race ahead of Dale Fugleberg and Henry Peters.
The Dempsey Truck Service Midwest Modifieds were next on the
track also running three heat races. Gary Sonstelie dominated
the first heat race over Chris Vargason and Ryan Schroeder.
Bobby Eckerdt crossed the finish line ahead of the first weeks
feature winner, Dustin Strand. James Sangrait finished a
strong third. Brock Gronwold who made the tow north because of
the rainout in
West Fargo , borrowed some
Goodyear tires from Dyrdahl and won his first DTRA heat race.
Joe Freeman and Gary Nelson Jr finished second and third to
wrap up the heat races for the
Midwest modified class.
The DTRA Super Late Models who are supported by Atek Auto
Parts ran three heat races of almost 10 cars each. Joey
Pederson raced forward to claim the first heat race win over
Brad Seng and James SanGrait. During a caution Howie Schill
pulled off the track after running third. The second heat race
was won by the first week’s feature winner, Mike Balcaen.
Stevie Anderson and Dale Skytland finished just behind Balcaen.
Ryan Corbett looked fast and didn’t make any mistakes to
capture the third heat race win. Youngster, Cody Skytland
finished second ahead of Troy Olson who made his first RCS
appearance.
There were twenty four NOSA Sprint Cars on hand sponsored by
Eide Motors. Jason Linnell was a rocket and easily won the
first heat race over Jeff Vonasek and Scott McDonald. Bob
Martin won the second heat race by not making any mistakes and
held off Tom Egeland. Dave Sobczak finished third. Mark
Dobmeier started in the second row and raced his way to the
front with Nygaard in pursuit. Dobmeier crossed the line ahead
of Nygaard, with Austin Monson third.
There were two B-Mains that were needed. One for the street
stocks and one for the late models. Steve Jose took the
checkered flag to transfer to the feature along with Tyson
Anderson, Joe Potter and Kris Austreng. There were eight late
models that ran the b-main with Tom Balcaen taking the
checkered flag. Todd Truedson, Brandon Fuller, Howie Schill,
Ricky Weiss all transferred to the feature also.
The Unicel Street Stock Feature event had Kerry Austreng and
Henry Peters on the front row to start the fifteen lapper.
Witner and Peters battled for the lead while Olson and
Thompson and Geringer mixed it up. Snare made his way up to
the front just before a caution came out for a multi-car
pileup on the frontstretch. After the officials got the
frontstretch cleared, Wittner lead the field around to take
the green flag. Peters and Snare moved up to challenge for the
lead but it was Snare that would secure the second spot over
Peters. Olson, Beier, and Thompson all were racing for a top
five spot when another caution came out with three laps to go.
Wittner held the lead with Snare second followed by Peters and
Olson with the field taking the green flag once more. Wittner
crossed the finish line first with Snare right behind him.
Peters, Olson and Geringer rounded out the top five, with
Tyson Anderson finishing sixth after transferring out the
consi.
Up next was the Dempsy Truck Service Midwest Modified feature
that had the whole crowd on the edge of their seat the entire
feature. Gary Sonstelie and Joe Freeman sat on the front row
with Riopelle and Schroeder in the second row. When the green
flag dropped it was Sonstelie that burst out to the lead with
Riopelle and Strand chasing him. SanGrait had dropped back a
couple spots, but then hit the afterburner and burst up to
challenge for the lead. There were about 6 cars that were
racing for the top three positions at many times during the
caution free race. With the track being very tacky and fast,
there was some rubbin back and forth, but from a fans
perspective it was a great race. Schmidt, Eckerdt,
Strand , Sonstelie, Riopelle
all had a chance to win it and at times they were three wide
in the corners battling for the top spots. In the end it was
Sangrait who had about a straightaway lead over Sonstelie and
Strand . With only two laps
to go, Riopelle slowed and pulled off ending his chance for a
top 5 finish. Schmidt and Eckerdt traded some paint for that
fourth spot. With the checkered flag in the air, SanGrait won
with Sontelie and
Strand trailing him. Schmidt
and Eckerdt finished in front of Nelson and Lepier. Gronwold
and Dale Kraling were in the mix for a potential top six
finish but settled for eighth and ninth.
With the crowd fired up after the Midwest Modified feature,
the DTRA Super Late Models rumbled up on the track sponsored
by Atek Auto Parts. With the field almost ready to go, Howie
Schill stopped on the front stretch with a left rear tire
issue and was assisted to the pits and not able to start the
feature. Cody Skytland and James SanGrait led the field around
for the green. Doug Amundson and Dale Skytland were in the
second row. It looked as if SanGrait was on a mission just
like in his Midwest Modified as he shot out to the lead. Then
a strong running Joey Pederson showed up to challenge for the
top two spots with Pederson overtaking SanGrait on the low
side. Mike Balcaen also appeared and was challenging Cody
Skytland for the third spot. While the race went green for
awhile, Sangrait seemed to slow which brought out a caution
and pull off with what seemed to be a tire issue. Also pulling
off the track was Hapka, Anderson and Weiss. Before the green
was given Pederson, Weiss made it back on the track. In the
closing laps, Pederson was too strong for Balcaen to get past
him as Seng looked to get past both Skytlands. Cody ended up
slipping back a few spots which allowed Troy Olson to move up
a spot or two. When the checkered flag was in the air,
Pederson crossed under it first with Balcaen and Seng
following. Dale Skytland held his own and finished fourth with
Olson chaulking up a top five finish.
The high powered NOSA Outlaw Sprints were the last feature of
the night. Vonasek and Linnell were on the front row with
Roemeling and McDonald just behind them. On the start, Linnell
looked to be the one to beat with Monson and Dobmeier making
their way up to challenge for the lead. With about five laps
complete, Dobmeier found his way past Linnell for the lead.
After two cautions, Dobmeier still held the lead with Linnnell
and Monson not far behind, after the restart, Bob Martin
motored his way through some traffic to move into a top five
spot. A third caution came out when Chris Shirek, Lou Kennedy
Jr., and Richard Rogers tangled in the middle of turns one and
two, with all being assisted pitside. After the field was
given the green flag again, Dobmeier continued to make some
distance on the rest of the field with Linnell and Martin
racing for the second spot. It would be Martin that secured
the second spot then Linnell and Monson. After two more brief
cautions, the field basically stayed the way they were running
with Dobmeier picking up his first win at River Cities
Speedway in 2007. Martin was second, followed by Linnell,
Monson, and McDonald.

Geringer, Strand, & Restad Earn Devils Lake Speedway Season
Opener Wins:
Date Posted: May 13th, 2007
Written By:
Mike Orness
Devils
Lake
Speedway
opened this past weekend with the first races for 2007.
Weather played a factor in postponing the first race last
weekend.
Devils
Lake
Speedway will be
running under a new banner this year, Midwest Dirt Racing
Association and the growing Dirt Track Racing Association.
These two associations will be part of the Midwest Modified
class and the Street Stock class. The Pure Stocks will be
racing under the MDRA rules and guidelines. Both DTRA and MDRA
are drivers associations and seem to fit the growing trend for
the drivers voice.
The ever popular Hornets were the first to hit the track with
Richard Barnes of
Grand Forks
winning the first heat race holding off Bryan Russell. Tony
Obregon led all but the last 50 feet of the second heat race
when he made contact with the front wall allowing Alex
Cavanaugh to pick up the win. Obregon’s car will bear the
number 92 in memory of late model driver John Seitz. The third
heat race was won by Scott Vasichek of
Michigan , ND,
with no competition after the first lap.
The MDRA Pure Stocks ran one heat race with the yellow flag
flying on the first lap. Lee Dahl’s right rear tire came off
the car ending his chance for a checkered flag. Mark Tuenge
took a three car lead over Aaron Restad and led all but the
last lap as Tuenge slipped a little high in turn two allowing
Restad past. Kevin Kollman picked up the third spot.
The MDRA Street Stocks ran two heat races of six cars each.
Rick Beier of Thief River Falls, MN was able to hold off Jim
Geringer of Harwod, ND to win the first heat race with Rodney
Hulst third. Steffen Snare continued his winning ways by
taking the 2nd heat race checkered flag over Dan
Arends and Greg Neumann.
The Service Tire/Goodyear Midwest Modifieds at
Devils
Lake are part of the
two track series that was developed between
River
Cities and
Devils
Lake .
There were eleven cars that raced two heat races with one
unable to make the call in the second heat race. Bobby Eckerdt
chased Dustin Strand pretty much the whole race and wasn’t
able to get past him.
Strand picked up his first
DLS heat race win of 2007. Dave Hultstrand started outside
Chris Vargason for the second heat race and pulled out to lead
at the drop of the green flag. Vargason settled for second
with Bryce Beck of
Minot,
ND third.
After a short intermission the Hornet b-main was ran with
Dustin Ebensteiner picking up the win and trophy over Rod
Cavaugh. The Hornet feature race started with Richard Barnes
and Alex Cavaugh on the front row. The first lap was not
complete as contact between some cars left debris on the
track, and officials called a jump start on Barnes penalizing
him two spots on the restart. On the restart it was Russell
that was able to sneak up to the lead with Cavanaugh, Barnes
and Vasichek chasing him. Russell led every lap to claim the
win with Barnes second, & Vasichek third.
Aaron Restad started the Pure Stock feature on the pole with
Mark Tuenge outside of him. Both put on a great race for the
first spot with Tuenge out front. Tuenge had some bad luck as
his right front tire came off in the closing laps giving the
lead to Restad. Kollman was able to hold off Arends for
second.
The next event was the MDRA/DTRA Street Stock feature race
with all twelve cars starting the feature. McNamee and
Pederson started on the front with Messner and Neumann in the
second row. On the start it was McNamee to the lead with
Geringer and Snare in pursuit. Geringer was able to get past
McNamee with eleven laps to go, and carried on for the win.
Snare pressured Geringer but wasn’t able to get past him and
settled for second. During a late race caution McNamee slowed
on the backstretch with mechanical problems. Messner, Arends,
and Reeves battled for the next spot with Beier in the mix.
Beier was able to secure the third spot with Messner and
Reeves rounding out the top five spots.
The feature race for the
Midwest modifieds was the
last event of the night sponsored by Service Tire of Devils
Lake. Jason Halverson drew the front row with Ryan Schroeder
outside pole.
Strand and Vargason composed
the second row. On the first lap it was
Strand that was able to find the front the
quickest. Kruk and Eckerdt were racing for second as the
yellow flag waved for Jeff Halverson. On the restart,
Strand led the field and was
able to keep the top spot with Eckerdt hot on his trail. Kruk
and Schroeder mixed it up a little, then Kruk put a couple of
cars between them. Strand
held off Eckerdt for the first feature win at DLS for 2007.
Jason Halverson rounded out the top five with a strong run.
The Orness Creations hard charger award went to Eckerdt who
advanced the most positions.

Strand Picks Up Second Win As Corcoran Finds Victory Lane
Again:
Date Posted: May 21st, 2007
Written By:
Mike Orness
Under a threat of weather moving in at anytime,
River Cities Speedway was able to complete their whole
program and wrap things up shortly after 10:30 PM. Within
another forty-five minutes, the rain started to fall. Two
repeat winners and two new faces were seen in the Rydell
Victory Lane for the 2007 racing season. To get things started
for the night, the Premier Racing Series began with the
three MDRA/DTRA Street Stock heat races.
Steve Jose led the field around to the checkered flag only to
get passed by last weeks feature winner Dave Wittner. Wittner
made his move around McNamee and Jose on the last lap to pick
up the heat race win from the sixth starting spot. Aaron Olson
use the front row starting spot to his advantage and let the
rest of the drivers battle for the second spot during the
second heat race. Olson led every lap while Geringer weaved
his way through the field from the last row. Beier then held
off Geringer to pick up the second spot when the checkered
flag was in the air for Olson. Greg Neumann drove right to the
front at the start of the third heat race and led every lap to
claim the heat race win. Steffen Snare started outside second
row, but couldn’t make his move to the first position and
settled for second. Arends was third after starting sixth.
Six DTRA/MDRA Midwest Modifieds started the three heat races
lined up for the evening, with the first heat race won by
Dustin Strand from outside the front row. Eckerdt & LePier
both advanced on spot to finish second and third, while Nelson
came from the back row to finish fourth in a race with no
cautions. John Halvorson was the fastest during the second
heat and picked up his first heat race win this year at RCS.
Jesse Olson was second after starting on the pole with
SanGrait third holding off Sobolik.
Gary Sonstelie also won from the outside front row starting
spot with Schroeder advancing two spots for second while the
pole starter Hultstrand slipped two spots to finish third.
The DTRA Super Late Models ran their three heat races next
with Dyrdahl and Pederson on the front row to lead the first
six cars to the green flag. Pederson took the lead and didn’t
look back till the checkered flag was in the air. The second
heat race was short two drivers that had 9 in their car
numbers. Fuller and Burke were not able to start. Erickson
started on the pole and led every lap with the same finishing
order as they started. Mike Balcaen grabbed the lead in the
final heat race from the pole and added another win to his
statistics. Ryan Corbett was running third with Seng when his
car wouldn’t turn and ended up in the water barrels in turn
four. Corcoran was third after starting fifth.
The NOSA Sprints also ran three heat races with eight cars in
each heat race. Vonasek and Roemeling led the first heat
around to the green flag with Vonasek getting the jump which
officials called back and sent him two spots back for a
restart. That put Chris Shirek on the pole with Roemeling
outside of him. Shirek led the first few laps but was
overtaken by McDonald and Linnell. McDonald went on to take
the checkered flag with Linnell in tow. Dobmeier came from the
back row to finish third. On the start of the second heat
race, Kennedy looked as if he could make an opening where
there wasn’t enough room and ended up sending outside pole
sitter, Nick Shirek into the front wall. The yellow came out
and Shirek was helped pitside. Kennedy was able to find his
way to the front during the first lap and continued on to the
checkered with Burke in tow from the sixth starting spot. Mike
Sitzmann Jr looked strong in the third heat race, leading most
of the laps from the outside pole spot. Nygaard soon made his
move to claim the lead with about 4 laps to go. Sitzmann
finished second with pole sitter Fredrickson third.
With all the heat races wrapped up in just over an hour, a
short intermission was taken for the drivers to redraw and the
fans to grab some grub. Officials also took a look at the
track and ran some packers over the loose mid to pack it back
in for the features.
The Unicel Street Stock fifteen lap feature started twenty-two
cars with Blacklance not making the call. Leake and Jose led
the field to the green flag to start. Not far into the feature
the red flag was flying as Paul Heaton took a ride off the
track in his first visit to RCS. He was ok and after the
cleanup the field was restarted with Leake leading Geringer,
Snare, and Hulst. With ten laps to go, Snare had made his move
to claim the lead over Leake. Geringer couldn’t find the line
around Leake and Snare used the lower groove to his advantage.
The field ran the lap counter down to about five laps to go
and then the yellow came out for the third and last time for
Potter, who seemed to get turned and collected Anderson and
Mutcher. Mutcher changed a tire and started tailend with
Potter. With Snare leading the field, the race was on for the
third spot between Wittner who came from the eighth spot and
Beier. They raced hard for that spot and in the closing laps
Wittner was able claim the third spot with Leake fourth and
Beier fifth. Snare grabbed his first win of the year at RCS
just ahead of Geringer who had won the season opener.
For the third straight race night the DTRA/MDRA Dempsey Truck
Service Midwest Modifieds seemed to put on quite a show for
the fans as the race for the lead and top five spots was
exciting throughout the eighteen laps. Last weeks feature
winner and Sobolik composed the front row with Hultstrand and
Eckerdt in the second row. On the start, SanGrait held the
lead with Eckerdt slipping in behind him. Eckerdt found his
way to the front on the next lap. The first caution flag flew
for Sparby with four laps complete. At this point Strand had
made his way up to the fourth spot after starting tenth. When
the race resumed, Eckerdt still had the lead as the top five
all raced hard for the same spot. Strand had just taken the
second spot from SanGrait when the next caution flag flew for
Jesse Olson. SanGrait held on to the second spot for the
restart with Eckerdt leading. With eleven laps to go, Strand
had secured the second spot and was right behind Eckerdt
looking to take over the lead. LePier and SanGrait raced for
the third spot with LePier being scored in that spot for that
lap, then SanGrait passed him back shortly before the next
caution for Hultstrand. This would setup a shootout for the
last six laps for anyone in the top six. Eckerdt was running
the middle to top line, which is Strands favorite. So Strand
ended up trying the lower groove and completed the pass on
Eckerdt with just two laps to go. While this unfolded, the
race for a top five spot also was close as Gary Nelson, LePier,
SanGrait and Halvorson all raced hard. Sobolik and Riopelle
were also in the mix, but fell back late in the race to finish
outside the top five. Strand crossed under the checkered flag
first for his second DTRA win in three tries, with Bryan
LePier sneaking past Eckerdt out of turn four for the second
spot. SanGrait scored fourth just ahead of Nelson.
Eighteen drivers were scheduled to start the twenty lap ATEK
Parts Feature race with Burke not able to start. Ryan Corbett
took the green flag for the points but then pulled off.
Veteran, Tom Corcoran drew the pole with Doug Amundson outside
of him to lead the field around to the green flag. Balcaen and
Erickson were in the second row to start as Corcoran grabbed
the lead on the start. Shortly after a brief caution for
Amundson, Corcoran led Balcaen, Pederson and the rest of the
field to the restart. After a few more laps, the yellow waved
again as Dyrdahl and SanGrait made contact coming out of turn
four. Officials charged the yellow to Dyrdahl and realigned
the field behind Corcoran for the restart. The race then went
caution free with Corcoran able to hold off Balcaen and
Pederson. Corcoran added to his 200+ feature wins as the fans
were treated to the third different driver in victory lane
this year for the late models. Pederson passed Balcaen to
secure the second spot, while Erickson finished fourth ahead
of
Anderson , both having a great run.
The NOSA Outlaw Sprints are typically the last feature of the
night and with the threat of rain all night, the program was
moving along smoothly. Officials kept their eye on the sky as
the drivers were getting pushed off for the twenty five lap
Eide Motors Feature race. Lee Grosz and Mike Sitzmann Jr led
the field of twenty three sprints around for the green flag.
On the first lap, Graham got loose at the top of turns one and
two, but saved it without incident with the rest of the
drivers. But then in the middle of turns three and four he
rolled off the top of the track which brought out the red
flag. Graham was ok and was assisted back to the pits on the
hook. One lap had been completed, so the officials radioed
down on the Raceceivers to the drivers the lineup. Within a
couple of parade laps we were back under full race speed.
Nygaard was leading the race with Sitzmann second and Linnell
chasing them after starting seventh. With eighteen to go,
Sitzmann was scored the leader and continued to lead until the
next caution flag waived for Tom Egeland who got upside down
on the backstretch. Upon the restart with Sitzmann leading,
Linnell, Dobmeier, and Nygaard all had their plans of getting
to the front, but it was Sitzmann who was able to lead more
laps until Dobmeier slid past him coming up on traffic.
Nygaard slipped back a couple of spots, but then found a new
line and caught Dobmeier in the closing laps. Sitzmann Linnell
and Lee Grosz rounded out the top five finishing spots as
Dobmeier held off Nygaard for his second win this season at
RCS from the ninth starting spot.
